Tinggi Island is rich in history. It was once an important stop for spice traders, probably because of its sheltered harbour. Today, the island is known for its sandy beach, rolling hills with verdant jungle, several Malay villages, modern resorts and Marine Park Centre. The centre provides useful information and must be visited for its roles in turtle hatchery and giant clam breeding.

Apart from its physical beauty, Tinggi Island is also famous for its mystical characters. The locals believe that Malay's most famous hero, Hang Tuah, had stopped here in one of his journeys. It is believed that his spirit still guards the island till these days.

The resorts have swimming pool, meeting rooms and entertainment facilities for visitors who prefer indoor activities. Outdoor activities include snorkelling, scuba diving, canoeing and fishing. Jungle trekking in the hilly verdant jungle that forms the backdrop of the island should be considered.

The village folks and their dwellings are another source of inspiration. The villagers are keen to serve tourist and there are certainly some lessons or experience that a visitor would gain from a visit to the villages, or engage in casual chats with the villagers.

Nicknamed the 'General’s Hat Island' by Chinese seamen hundreds of years ago, Tinggi Island lies 32km south-east of Mersing, on the east coast of Johor.
